This site offered us various challenging elements such as steep slope, and existing complicated structure.

Issues were -
  • All the adjoining properties within the street and to the rear have their private open space to the back.
  • The subject property has a small amount of private open space to the back and large entertaining front yard with a pool.
  • The pool area is cordoned off and is not connected to the living areas in anyway. It is not linked to the house and thus does not contribute as usable private open space.
  • The entry to the house is not defined. It is not sheltered and is uninviting.
  • The facade consists of external old timber paneling with old windows.

  • The entire building is crying for up-gradation and a fresh new contemporary look.

    Design – The proposal solved all the issues –

  • By creating an indoor internal entertainment area at the pool level by excavating about 1.2m.
  • By extending the pool level area, the space will be at one level which will allow the owners to use it as a private open space for entertainment and recreation.
  • The living room at the entry level is extended out along with the balcony. Thus, the pool area now becomes the part of the house with easy access.
